E-liability Institute Welcomes Renowned Scientist Maria Zuber as New Board Chair
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: 30 September 2024
The E-liability Institute is pleased to announce that Professor Maria T. Zuber, one of the United States’ most respected scientists, will be joining our Board of Directors as the new Chair, effective 1 October 2024. Our present Chair, Chris Liddell, will continue to serve as a member of our Board of Directors as Inaugural Chair Emeritus.
Maria Zuber is currently the E. A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics and Presidential Advisor for Science and Technology Policy at MIT. She served as MIT’s Vice President for Research from 2013 to 2024, overseeing MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory and a dozen interdisciplinary research labs while fostering research relationships with the US federal government. In this capacity, she oversaw all of MIT’s energy and climate activities and led the development of MIT’s first two university-wide climate action plans. Zuber has been a leading figure in space exploration, playing key roles in scientific experiments for ten NASA missions, including serving as the Principal Investigator of the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission. She is the first woman to lead a NASA planetary mission and to head a science department at MIT.
Zuber is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been appointed by four U.S. Presidents to key advisory roles, serving on the Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy under President Bush, the National Science Board under Presidents Obama and Trump, chairing that Board under President Trump, and she currently co-chairs President Biden’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). She additionally serves as a non-executive director on the boards of two Fortune 500 companies, Bank of America and Textron.
Professor Karthik Ramanna, co-founder and Principal Investigator of the E-liability Institute, remarked: “Our founding Chair, Chris Liddell, a quiet behind-the-scenes powerhouse, moved the E-liability Institute, within two years of its founding, to a transformational stage by driving us to take our analytic concepts to practice. Maria Zuber’s deep expertise in science, policy, and sustainability will help move us to the next phase of our supply-chain decarbonization mission by integrating the rigor of carbon accounting with climate science.”
Zuber remarked, “I am thrilled to join the E-liability Institute and work with such an innovative and impactful team. I look forward to bringing my experience in science, technology, and policy to further strengthen the organization’s mission and expand its global influence.”
Liddell remarked, “It has been an honor to serve as Chair, and I am delighted that someone as outstanding as Maria will lead the Institute to new heights.”
